THE LEDUCIAN LECTURE (Silent Ver.)

[This is the version where I went crazy and used outside material, the Portfolio Ver. will be here when I finish editing it.]

Skills Commentary

This project session was probably the most effective my team has been. There are definitely areas that we could improve on, such as scheduling, and recording ADR, but overall we accomplished everything we wanted to in an efficient manner.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

This is the second time that I acted as a director, which involved me making decisions that effected the production of the film. Luckily, I had a collaborator, my co-director, Nathan—

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

I’m just gonna keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully replicate these events.

Reactions to the Final Version

The premiere of the film was critically acclaimed, many people are very excited to see what happens next.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

I was pretty happy with it. All of the problems I have with it are pretty minor.

Film Analysis: SNEAKERELLA (2022)

Do You Wash Your Sneakers?

Do You Wash Your Sneakers?” by 水泳男 is licensed under CC BY-NC 2.0 .

Summary

SNEAKERELLA is a modern retelling of the classic story of Cinderella.

Film Analysis

Film TitleSNEAKERELLA
Year2022
DirectorElizabeth Allen Rosenbaum
CountryUnited States
GenreMusical/Comedy
If you could work on this film (change it), what would you change and why?I would use less autotune for the actors singing, their other music (outside of the film) is fine without it. I would also use more practical effects; the CGI is horrendous, and most of the movie is filmed using a green screen (it was filmed during COVID shutdowns).

Film information can be found at imdb.com

As you view films, consider how the cuts, camera angles, shots, and movement work to create particular meanings. Think about how they establish space, privilege certain characters, suggest relationships, and emphasize themes. In addition to shot distances, angles, editing, and camera movement, note details of the narrative, setting, characters, lighting, props, costume, tone, and sound.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Who is the protagonist?
    El.
  2. Who is the antagonist?
    Stacy and Zelly, El’s step-brothers.
  3. What is the conflict?
Trey, El’s step-father is going to sell El’s late mother’s sneaker store. El wants to become a professional sneaker designer to be able to afford to keep the store afloat and work for the King brand. His step-brothers want to use this opportunity to convince their father to take them all back to New Jersey and will do anything to stop El from reaching his goals.
  4. What is the theme, or central, unifying concept?
    Don’t lie.
  5. How is the story told? (Linear, non-linear, with flashbacks, flash-forwards, or regular intervals)
The story is told linearly with flashbacks.
  6. What “happens” in the plot? (Brief description)
El is a stock boy at his step-father’s sneaker store. He goes to a sneaker drop and meets Kira King, the daughter of Darius King, an influential sneaker C.E.O. Kira wants El to work as a professional designer for the King brand and tries to get him to meet her father. Experience matters a lot to him, so El lies to her and says that he has a lot of professional experience. Stacy and Zelly tell King that El is just a stock boy, and has no professional experience, and he tells El to leave and never talk to his daughter again. El goes to Sneakercon with some new sneakers made for Kira, and engages in a rap battle with King and then they become partners.
  7. How does the film influence particular reactions on the part of viewers (sound, editing, characterization, camera movement, etc.)? Why does the film encourage such reactions?
Well, it uses catchy music to get the viewers pumped up. It does this to keep the viewers engaged.
  8. Is the setting realistic or stylized? What atmosphere does the setting suggest? Do particular objects or settings serve symbolic functions?
    It’s mostly realistic.
  9. How are the characters costumed and made up? What does their clothing or makeup reveal about their social standing, ethnicity, nationality, gender, or age? How do costumes and makeup convey character?
Normally the characters are dressed pretty casually. But when El and Sami go to the charity gala disguised as important people they are dressed very nicely.
  10. How does the lighting design shape our perception of character, space, or mood?
During the song, In Your Shoes, the scenes of El in modern-day are set at night and the flashbacks are clearly set in the daytime. The contrast is used to differentiate the settings.
  11. How do camera angles and camera movements shape our view of characters or spaces? What do you see cinematically?
  12. What is the music’s purpose in the film? How does it direct our attention within the image? How does it shape our interpretation of the image? What stands out about the music?
The film is a musical. It does a good job of moving the plot forward using the songs.
  13. How might industrial, social, and economic factors have influenced the film? Describe how this film influences or connects to a culture?
It’s a very cultured film. It focused on the main character’s neighborhood a lot.
  14. Give an example of what a film critic had to say about this film. Use credible sources and cite sources. Example: “The Shawshank Redemption Movie Review (1994) | Roger Ebert.” All Content. N.p., n.d. Web. 24 June 2015.
  15. Select one scene no longer than 5 minutes that represents well the whole film and shows relevant cinematic elements. Write a one-sentence description of the scene and record the time of the scene. Example: from 1:05:00 to 1:10:00. Explain why you chose this scene.
  16. In the selected scene: write a sentence for each of the elements below to justify why this scene best represents the film—
    • Screenwriting—
The screenwriting behind this scene is represented in the lyrics of the song.
    • Sound Design—
    • Camera Movements/Angles—
    • Light Setup—
    • Soundtrack/Score—
  17. What’s the socio-cultural context of this film?

This worksheet was developed with ideas from many IB Film teachers, and thus should remain in the Creative Commons.

The 7 Laws of Film Editing
  • Watch every frame of raw footage at least twice. Then start.
  • Nurture the relationship with the director.
  • Find any shot instantly. Organization is paramount.
  • Factor in extra time for renders, exports, errors & crashes.
  • Attempt edits that shouldn’t work. You’ll be surprised.
  • Spend more time on audio. It’s the glue of your edit.
  • Cut for the scene, but always in the context of the whole film.

The FILM

Skills Commentary

Throughout this film project, we had to deal with many issues.

This was the first and last time I use a team project to edit. I thought that it would help with collaborating with my Sound Designer/Composer and make it easier to work on the film at home, but it just didn’t work, so I will go back to using the normal project files.

We shot the film in 4K using my Cinematographer’s own camera, which caused the file sizes to become very large, the final uncompressed version of the film ended up at 28 Gigabytes.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

I think that we did a good job this time around. This was the first time that I did additional editing outside of the class, on my home computer. So a lot of my time was spent on getting used to doing that, so I think that in the next session I will be more efficient with that sort of thing.

Skills Commentary

I tried to edit it to the best of my abilities with a limited amount of time. I think that I successfully showed a good line of sight between the two characters and maintained the flow of the dialogue.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

We had to figure out how to properly use the cameras on our own. We did alright considering we didn’t have a cinematographer.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

I collaborated closer with my director and screenwriter due to the lack of our other two members.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

The film was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro and exported using Adobe Media Encoder.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

I sort of learned how to work with a limited amount of people and time constraints.

Reactions to the Final Version

I received feedback that said that I managed to maintain a good line of sight throughout the film.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

Our cinematographer and sound designer were gone during filming. This affected the quality of our film greatly. We lost days of post-production figuring out how to properly film without our cinematographer. The audio quality was also inferior to other films due to the lack of other audio sources (besides the cameras themselves) because our sound designer was out.

Because I only had around two days to edit the film, the film remains unfinished at this point. If I had more time, or if all of my team members were here I would be able to complete the film on time.

There were more things that we wanted to do with it but were limited because of our time. For example, we were planning on using three different cameras, but after our cinematographer’s suspension, we were only able to use two cameras. Since our cinematographer was gone and the other member’s limited training with cinematography, some of the shots that we recorded had the cameras in the frame. I was going to crop it out and change the aspect ratio to 5:4 but unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time in post-production.

In the final scene where images are shown of the characters with text descriptions of what they end up doing in the future, which was parodying biopics that utilize the same technique such as The Social Network, there was supposed to be music in the background, but my sound designer didn’t have enough time to create anything that was usable.

Even in our final (not really) version, we still went over the normal runtime limit of 60 seconds. The film’s total runtime was 1 minute and 50 seconds. There was also additional footage that I was planning on releasing separately from the presentation but due to the low morale of my group, we decided against continuing this project and instead focusing on the next session.

The production of our film was executed quite poorly, all things considered.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

I learned how to edit using Premiere Pro. I used WeVideo for the past two sessions, so this was new to me.

Most of the problems with the film were left unsolved. I had come up with solutions to the problems, I just didn’t get the chance to properly implement them.
